At the age of 35, Benazir Bhutto became the Prime Minister of Pakistan, and the first woman to head the government of an Islamic State. Her government built over 24,000 schools, brought electricity to almost all villages in the country, and institutionalized revolutionary macroeconomic reform. Although Ms. Bhutto was arrested on numerous occasions and spent nearly six years in prison or under detention for her leadership, she continued to focus her attention on programs for health care, social welfare, and education for the underprivileged. Ms. Bhutto is the author of Daughter of Destiny and Foreign Policy in Perspective.
